AS MANY British teenagers sweltered in their parents’ cars in queues for the Channel tunnel, the 15-year-old grandson of the Marquess of Queensberry was emailing his mother from the Snow Dragon II, a 49ft aluminium-hulled sailing boat inside the Arctic Circle.
“We just hit a big iceberg,” wrote Tybalt Peake last week. “Luckily there isn’t a crazy amount of damage.”
The vessel with Peak aboard was soon on its way heading up the Greenland coast towards the Northwest Passage, the ice-clogged Arctic waterway that leads from Baffin Bay to the northern shores of Alaska.
As the junior crew member and the only male on board a boat skippered by one of Britain’s most adventurous female sailors, Peake is hoping to become the youngest seaman to complete one of the world’s most daunting maritime challenges.
